A lively Peruvian Gesha—light and juicy, with layered summer fruit sweetness and a long, resonant acidity.

Our introduction to this coffee was facilitated by our friend Mark Russell from Khipu Coffee, who has a remarkable talent for discovering exceptional farmers in Peru. We featured a Red Bourbon from Marcos Herrera last year, and it seems his coffee is getting better every year.

Marcos' journey in coffee cultivation is deeply personal. He inherited his father's farm, once known as "Oso Perdido" (Lost Bear), a name reflecting his father's solitary dedication to the land. Today, alongside his wife and son, Marcos continues to build on this legacy. Their farm, now called Mamaruntu, is situated in Rodriguez Tafur, Lonya Grande, within Peru's Amazonas region. Since 2014, he has focused on varieties like Gesha, Bourbon, and SL28. His dedication has garnered recognition; in 2024, his Natural Geisha secured 14th place at the Cup of Excellence.

Marcos has developed a distinctive and thoughtful approach to processing his naturally fermented coffees. He starts by collecting only fully mature cherries, which are then washed and fermented in-cherry for 72 hours in sealed tubs known locally as timbos. The cherries are then dried whole over 30 days in solar dryers.
