Huila, Colombia, where this coffee was grown, is a region of striking diversity. At one end lies the Desierto de la Tatacoa—a semi-arid desert known for its surreal, eroded landscapes in shades of red and grey. At the other stands Nevado del Huila, the country’s highest active volcano. Huila is also home to the source of the Magdalena River, Colombia’s most important waterway, and the San Agustín Archaeological Park, which holds one of Latin America’s largest collections of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures, remnants of a pre-Columbian civilisation that still remains largely mysterious.
Coffee arrived in Huila later than in other parts of Colombia, as the region initially lacked the infrastructure needed for transport and trade. But when production began, it quickly focused on quality. The combination of high elevations, rich volcanic soils, and a favourable climate showed clear potential for exceptional coffees. In 2013, Huila was granted a Denomination of Origin (DO) status—recognising the distinctive cup profiles that have since come to define the region.
