This lot of heirloom and landrace varieties was grown in the Bensa District in Sidama. The people of Sidama have a deep respect for nature rooted in their spiritual belief system. This connection is evident in their agricultural approach, which centres on a sustainable agroforestry system. Coffee—an essential source of income—is grown alongside enset, a staple food crop often referred to as “false banana.” Intercropping in this way allows for efficient use of sunlight, water and soil nutrients while also preserving the biodiversity of the region.
