gesha

Villa Luciana Gesha

Naturally processed, this delightful Gesha lot offers delicate perfumed florals over layered, complex, sticky-sweetness.

Colombia is broken up into thirty-two distinct departments, and with this stunning lot from Villa Luciana we travel to Nariño, bordering Ecuador to the south and the Pacific ocean to the west. With three Andean mountain ranges converging in the region Nariño presents the ideal altitudes and fertile soil for high-grown Arabica cultivation.

The particular geography of the region and its proximity to coastal and land borders have historically transformed it into a corridor for illicit trade routes, resulting in a dangerous area for remote mountain farms. Today, thanks to the particularly resilient and fearless spirit of Nariño’s farmers, the small region is a respected nucleus of coffee innovation.

Karen and Jose Gomez run Cooperativa Cafes Especiales in Buesaco, the cooperative that collates microlots from the region, with Villa Luciana named after their daughter. The farm lies just twenty minutes from Buesaco, past the “barrio”, or suburbs This is their very first crop of Gesha, originally gifted to Karen’s family by Pablo Andres Guerrero of Hacienda El Obraje, another respected farm from the region.

Karen’s family has incredibly deep roots in the region, with many of her fifty-or-so relatives still living in the mountains between Buesaco and the city of Pasto, the department’s capital.
